West Lombok is the logical steadying down place for the visitant. The popular Gili islands are in the district, as are all the major Balinese temples, the center of the Wetu Telu and Mt. Rindjani. Heading north from Ampenan city, the road rises over 2 small hills and the drops down to the coast at a long, curved beach, the Senggigi beach. On dawning following moonless nighttimes, these hills offer the better bird's eye view of a sea dotted with colourful triangular-sailed fishing catamarans retuning home to the beaches north of Ampenan. The fishers take their craft out at sundown in a long line, their lamps forming a beautiful display seeable from many of Senggigi’s beachside hotels.
The 1st of the small hills, Batu Layar, holds the sanctified grave of one of the Muslim holy men (Walis) who brought Muslimism to Lombok. Locals pray at a wayside shrine here, a short walk up from the road. From the top of the 2nd hill you can walking down to the seaside Balinese at Batu Bolong.
Senggigi’s row of hotels creeping northward along the seacoast. They line a seaside road the whole way to Pamenang city, twenty kilometres from Batu Bolong. This road follows the coastline, altho it does climb some hills which offer splendiferous panoramas of coastwise coco groves and the ocean. The old road to Pamenang runs further inland. In starts out at Mataram urban centre, passes Rembiga and Gunung Sari village, which has a busy week-long market, then begins climbing around the village Sidemen.
