Gili Air is the ‘mainland’, has the highest local population of three. The beach runs the whole way around Gili Air’s 100 plus hectares, and the most better sunning and snorkel diving areas are located out on southerly shore. The waters off Gili Air are crystal clear, but snorkel diving is marred by dynamite-blasted coral, a limited number and variety of fish, and the seasonal visit of stinging jellyfish, tiny critters but bothersome enough at times to drive you from the water. The best snorkel diving is at the edge of the reef, which encircles the island, where the coral slopes down to the 14-20 metre bottom. The west coast of Gili Air is pretty barren, but you might be lucky and see a school of 1-1.5 metre Napoleon wrasse.
